Breast Cancer Survivor founded SIS

This Sunday I met a lovely woman at the most not obvious place imaginable...  A motorcycle show at the OnCenter in Syracuse.  I was drawn to her booth because of the necklace she was wearing - a sikorsky crystal (beautiful) and we began to chat.  She began to talk about the organization SIS which she was fundraising for.  Interesting that I am trained in Cancer Massage through Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and this is an organization for individuals battling breast cancer...

The organization called SIS (Sustain Inspire Survive) is a non profit organization created to provide financial assistance to families in need when challenged with breast cancer.  A breast cancer diagnosis brings with it a wide range of fear, anxiety and uncertainty. I have found that many women confide in me that they fear "not being a woman" anymore.  Our society has put so much sexual emphasis on womens breasts that this diagnosis can make a woman really question who she is.   With all of the emotional challenge, many women are also faced with an enormous increased financial strain.  Needing to make the choice between paying for treatment or putting food on the table for their children.

Andrea Caruso, founder of SIS (2005) and breast cancer survivor, was a single mom with two daughters.  She was fortunate to have the emotional and financial support of her sister.  With a personal understanding of this challenge she set out to help others who might not have the benefit of someone like her sister.  In her restored health, she was impassioned to create this organization to collect and distribute funding to those in need.  Their largest fund raiser is their annual calendar.  Each year the calendar features 12 beautifully artistic photographic interpretations of survivors' own thoughts about life since their diagnosis.

Many volunteer opportunities exist within the organization.  Please look at their website (www.helpsis.org) or phone (585) 730 5720 if you are interested in helping.  If you would like to organize a fund raiser in our area, please let me know.  I know personally I have been touched by breast cancer within my own family, and it seems to me that most people I talk with either know someone close or work with someone who currently has, or has had breast cancer. Help them and help yourself by volunteering, it feels good in your heart and creates a very positive vibration!!
